How do you stop dog sniffing on a walk.Dave is now 7 mnths old and is getting much better on the lead but his nose is permanently fixed to the floor sniffing. When we walk he takes no notice of me as he is in a world of his own sniffing the pavement. Has anyone else experienced this? Is it normal puppy springer behaviour that he will grow out of or does anyone know how I can stop him? Any advice will be greatly appretiated.
Hi osborn1603 yes it's quite normal for a Springer to have his nose glued to the floor especially on his lead, what type of lead do you use try using a harness lead with more of the lead round the top of his neck so you can hold his head up a lot easier and try to walk him to heel with his head held high, Daves only young yet so with training you should be able to overcome this ,hope this is of some help :)
Hi Springers are gun dogs and are meant to sniff out birds. Police use them and train them to sniff out drugs and in Australia they are used to sniff out food at airports. They will always sniff the ground. It's normal for them. cheers
Put his nose to good use and start training him as a gundog, searchdog.. etc... it will tire him out too so give you a good nights sleep !! :)
This is completely normal they have constantly got there nose stuck to the floor or anything they can sniff. Oscar is 2yrs nearly now and he still does it i dont mind its in the nature and its quite funny to atch the only time it gets annoying is when you are walking and he stops dead behind you with his nose stuck in the floor and you end up dragging him along behind you! I should not worry to much its a springer thing and like the last post said they are gun dogs and its what they are bread to do. But you can get head harness for him. I usually just take Oscar in the field anyway so he can burn some energy off jumping in and out of the woods so he can sniff all he wants. And then ill lead walk him home as he is tired out anyway so he does not tend to sniff after the field.
