Question about age to leave the mother.
Meant to be picking our puppy up tomorrow but she will only be 5 weeks and 6 days old. Is this too young? I feel as if it is but i know nothing about pups really. Thanks

I dont know for certain, but I thought it was 8 weeks. Angus was 8 weeks when I got him.

I got Max when he was 7wks - he had been weaned from his mother for about 10 days ( I think ) I don't know if your pup is too young. The only thing with getting Max at 7wks it seemed ages til I could take him for a walk - I had to wait a month or so til he had his vaccinations. Hope all goes well & you enjoy your pup ! That is a bit too young to leave mum, think its 8 weeks before they should go.

7 or 8 weeks is the norm. 5-6 weeks is a little too early IMO.

Personally, when I breed ESS pups they go to new homes between 7 and 9 weeks. All my pups are fully weaned by six weeks but some are more independant than others and benefit by staying a little longer with the litter and Mom.

One of the problems is that you cannot vaccinate until 8 or preferably 9 weeks and a pup leaving the litter early misses out on a lot of socialisation with the other pups and parents.

In the States, it is the norm for pups to leave the mother at 4 to 5 weeks but then usually they go to puppy creche - they often neuter at around 4 to 6 weeks too. I don't agree with this, just saying that others do things differently.

If you have a very young pup at home then it is really important to watch the diet, keep up with regular worming and let the pup meet people and vaccinated dogs in a totally safe environment.

To Archie's Mummy I'd say be sure that the breeder gives you full information on the worming so far and three or four days supply of the food Archie is used to. It is a big enough change to leave home and Mom without the food being different too!.
Also, I suggest to people who buy from me that if at all possible they take the pup to the vet the same day as they pick it up. Then if the vet finds any problem that makes the pup 'unfit for sale' it comes straight back to me for a full refund (This has never been necessary I ought to say).

So again Archie's Mum, get him vet checked as soon as possible and have a receipt from the breeder for the full purchase price. I hope that you don't have any problems and will have a lovely pup to take home but best to have the purchase details in writing.

We picked Oscar up at 8 weeks i think 6 is too young but thats just personal oppinion. If he seems happy enough to break away from his siblings then he should be fine.

Thats how we got oscar he was not interested in playing with his siblings more interested in us.

How exciting for you though i could not contain my excitment when we picked Oscar up he was so cute! and still is.

hi i got him vet checked and all was fine he has now had all his jabs and been miro chiped too
